For years, rum cocktails have been closely associated with the Pirates of the Caribbean. The intoxicating spirit of adventure, danger, trouble, and clever tricks — all of it brings to mind Captain Jack Sparrow. And of course, everyone remembers that it was rum that once saved his life. While we’re not pirates, there are days when rum can just as easily “save” us, too. For example, when unexpected guests arrive and we want to surprise them with a special cocktail, we’re lucky to have rum and all the other necessary ingredients on hand. So let’s take a closer look at rum itself and the mixers that can turn any gathering into something unforgettable.
Rum Cocktails — Types
Rum cocktails work for virtually any occasion. That’s mainly because rum comes in different styles that vary not only in color but also in flavor. The most popular are white and dark rum, with golden rum being less common.

White rum, also called light or silver rum, is a mild spirit and is considered the most versatile type. Interestingly, unlike many other spirits, its clear color doesn’t necessarily mean it hasn’t been aged. Many white rums are, in fact, matured in barrels but then filtered to remove the initial color. Most original light rums come from Puerto Rico.
Dark rum, often referred to as black rum, has the deepest flavor compared to white or golden varieties. Strong notes of caramel and a distinct herbal undertone are easily noticeable. Its darker shade and bold color come from extended aging in charred barrels, usually in Jamaica, Haiti, or Central American countries.
Rum with Tonic
What’s the secret behind making cocktails? Some say it’s all about choosing the right alcohol, while others point to bartending skills. However, the real secret has long been simply keeping tonic in your fridge. You heard that right — tonic-based cocktails have become not only a classic but practically the foundation of mixology.
While the gin & tonic is the classic choice, rum with tonic definitely deserves attention, too. Simple to prepare, suitable for any occasion, and requiring no special skills, a rum & tonic is a quick and tasty option anytime.
Ingredients:
- 45 ml dark rum
- 120 ml tonic
- 1 lime slice
- Ice
Preparation:
Fill a highball glass with ice, then pour in the rum and tonic. Stir gently, and garnish with a lime slice.
Rum with Sprite
Another easy and refreshing cocktail is a combination of rum and Sprite. It’s light, bubbly, and has a minty twist.
Ingredients:
- 50 ml dark rum
- 100 ml Sprite
- A few mint leaves
Preparation:
Fill a highball glass with ice, add rum and Sprite, and stir lightly. Garnish with a lime slice.
Simple Cocktails with White Rum
White rum remains the classic base for most cocktails. The most famous ones include Cuba Libre, Mojito, and Piña Colada. Despite sharing the same base, each of these drinks has its own distinct character:
Cuba Libre
This drink dates back to the early 20th century and became a symbol of Cuba’s independence. American soldiers during the Spanish-American War were among the first to mix rum with cola.
Ingredients:
- 50 ml white rum
- 100 ml Coca-Cola
- 10 ml lime juice
- 1 lime slice
A few ice cubes
Preparation:
Fill a highball glass with ice, add lime juice, then pour in rum and cola. Stir gently and garnish with a lime slice.
Mojito
Arguably the most popular rum cocktail worldwide, the Mojito is aromatic, refreshing, and a go-to summer drink. Made with rum, mint, lime, and sugar, it quenches thirst and brings a touch of summer even in winter.
Ingredients:
- 50 ml white rum
- 20 ml lime juice
- 2 tsp brown sugar
- A few mint leaves
- 25 ml sparkling water
- 3–4 lime slices
- Ice
Preparation:
In a Collins or Fizz glass, add ice, lime juice, and brown sugar. Stir gently. Add mint leaves and lime slices (save one for garnish). Pour in rum and sparkling water, then garnish with the last lime slice.
Pina Colada
Unlike the previous cocktails, Piña Colada stands out with its creamy, tropical flavor. A coconut-pineapple delight, this cocktail gained massive popularity in the 1980s, though it was created decades earlier. The name translates from Spanish as “strained pineapple.”
Ingredients:
- 60 ml white or coconut rum
- 120 ml pineapple juice
- 30 ml coconut milk
- Pineapple slice or cherry — for garnish
Ice
Preparation:
Adjust the pineapple juice and coconut milk to your taste. Blend rum, pineapple juice, coconut milk, and ice until smooth and well combined. Pour into a tall glass and garnish with a pineapple or a cherry.
Simple Cocktails with Dark Rum
For those who enjoy stronger, more decadent flavors, dark rum is the ideal choice. Its caramel notes add depth and character, making cocktails like Planter’s Punch, Dark ’n’ Stormy, and Zombie unforgettable.
Planter’s Punch
A 19th-century classic built on the formula “one part sour, two parts sweet, three parts strong, four parts weak.”
Ingredients:
- 30 ml lime juice (sour)
- 60 ml sugar syrup or grenadine (sweet)
- 90 ml dark rum (strong)
- 120 ml orange or pineapple juice (weak)
Preparation:
Combine all the ingredients in a tall glass, stir, and garnish with orange slices, pineapple, or a sprig of mint.
Dark’n’Stormy
Ginger beer doesn’t just shine on its own — it’s the perfect partner for rum. The mix of caramel rum notes with the spicy kick of ginger evokes storm clouds rolling in, which is precisely where the name originates.
Ingredients:
- 60 ml dark rum
- 150 ml ginger beer
- 15 ml lime juice
- Lime wedge for garnish
- Ice
Preparation:
In a highball or Collins glass filled with ice, pour the ginger beer first, then the lime juice, and finally the rum. Garnish with lime.

A cocktail with an apocalyptic name and flavor to match. Complex but worth it, the Zombie is intense, fruity, and unforgettable.

- 50 ml dark rum
- 50 ml white rum
- 25 ml lime juice
- 25 ml lemon juice
- 25 ml grenadine
- 100 ml pineapple juice

In a shaker or blender, add ice, rum, lime juice, lemon juice, grenadine, pineapple juice, and sugar. Shake or blend vigorously. Pour into a tall, wide glass and garnish with a pineapple or a cherry. Enjoy the refreshing, bold taste of the Zombie!
