2021 Schäfer-Fröhlich, Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the most acclaimed estates of the Nahe, known for fiercely precise, terroir-transparent dry Rieslings. Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg is a historic Grand-Cru slope of porphyry and volcanic rock, and the 2021 Grosses Gewächs captures the site’s signature fire: searing mineral edges, cool-climate acidity, and crystalline fruit. Fermented with meticulous control in stainless steel and large traditional oak, it reflects Tim Fröhlich’s hallmark style — uncompromising purity, density without weight, and a nervy energy that defines top German dry Riesling.
Serve chilled but not too cold, around 10–11 C, to let the volcanic aromatics fully open. This GG belongs at refined, high-acidity food moments: think oysters with citrus, seared scallops, fresh crab, or delicate sashimi. Its pure acid line and smoky mineral depth also pair beautifully with grilled prawns, herb-driven dishes like tarragon chicken, or even vegetarian plates with fennel, asparagus, or citrus vinaigrettes. The wine’s tension and salinity align with the pairing principles highlighted by The Tasting Alliance and Wine Folly, emphasizing balance of acidity, intensity, and complementary mineral and herbal notes.
