Tasting Characteristics

Angostura Aromatic Bitters traces its origins to 1824 when German surgeon-general Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert developed a medicinal tonic in Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela) for the troops of Simón Bolívar. The production was later moved to Trinidad, and the formula has remained a closely guarded secret. Today, the House of Angostura’s aromatic bitters are ubiquitous in cocktail craft and culinary applications worldwide.

Aromas and flavours:
Primary
Aroma/Nose: Rich bouquet of herbs, roots and fragrant spices, layered with subtle citrus-oil nuance and undertones of gentian bitterness.
Secondary
Palate/Taste: Concentrated herbal core with a mix of bitter gentian root, aromatic bark, dried fruit peel, and spice; the high ABV lends immediate impact though it’s used sparingly.
Tertiary
Finish: Short-to-medium, the bitterness and herbaceous character linger, cleansing the palate and leaving a dry, aromatic after-taste.
Gastronomy

Although the bottle suggests liquor, Angostura Bitters is primarily used as a flavouring in dashes or small measures, not as a drink poured straight. Add a few drops or dashes to classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Pink Gin or Queen’s Park Swizzle. In culinary settings, it elevates savoury sauces, marinades and desserts, enhancing complexity without adding volume. Because of its bitterness and aromatic intensity, it pairs well with rich meats, spicy dishes or bold cheeses — the bitter-herb notes contrast and refine hearty flavour profiles.
