Tasting Characteristics

Cointreau was created in Angers by Édouard Cointreau in 1875, combining sweet and bitter orange peels distilled in copper stills to produce a triple sec liqueur of exceptional clarity and aromatic intensity. The brand remains a benchmark for orange-liqueurs, balancing sweetness and bitterness with no artificial flavourings, and playing a foundational role in world-class cocktails and bar traditions.

Aromas and flavours:
Primary
Aroma/Nose: Zesty sweet orange peel, bitter orange rind, fresh citrus oils, subtle spice like nutmeg and cardamom.
Secondary
Palate/Taste: Clean, crystalline texture; bright orange sweetness up front, measured bitterness on the mid-palate, accompanied by mellow spice and citrus depth.
Tertiary
Finish: Medium length; lingering citrus oil, gentle warmth from alcohol, and a clean after-taste that invites further sip or mixing.
Gastronomy

Serve chilled neat or with a large ice cube in a tumbler, or use as the definitive orange element in cocktails such as the Margarita, Cosmopolitan or Sidecar. Its crisp orange profile is also a superb partner to creamy desserts (vanilla panna cotta, white chocolate mousse), citrus-based tarts and light goat cheeses, where the citrus-bitterness contrast refreshes the palate.
