The brand's story dates back to 1942, when a 17-year-old Don Julio González founded the La Primavera distillery in Atotonilco el Alto. Over the next 40 years he consistently put quality ahead of quantity – planting his agaves further apart so they could fully mature, and harvesting only the plants at their peak. The brand bearing his name was created in 1985 by his sons to celebrate their father's 60th birthday; the tequila quickly gained popularity and went into wider production.
