Tasting CharacteristicsWilli Haag Juffer-Sonnenuhr Brauneberg Riesling GG 2023 comes from one of the Mosel’s most revered south-facing vineyards, officially classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE. Old vines rooted in deep blue slate soils deliver concentration, tension, and unmistakable site character. Fermentation and extended lees aging in large traditional oak casks build texture and longevity without masking purity. As a Grosses Gewächs, this wine is vinified fully dry and designed for aging, offering structure and precision rather than immediate charm. It is a benchmark expression of Brauneberg Riesling at its most serious.
Aromas and flavours:
Primary
Aroma/Nose: White peach, yellow apple, and lemon zest, layered with crushed slate, wet stone, subtle herbal notes, and a restrained hint of smoke.
Secondary
Palate/Taste: Dry, tightly structured, and medium-plus bodied. Ripe stone fruit and citrus are framed by vibrant acidity and a deep mineral core. The palate is dense yet controlled, showing power without heaviness and remarkable clarity of terroir.
Tertiary
Finish: Very long and persistent, with saline minerality, citrus tension, and a stony, mouthwatering close that signals strong aging potential.
GastronomyServe at 10–12°C and consider decanting young vintages to allow the wine to unfold. This GG Riesling pairs exceptionally well with refined fish dishes, lobster, scallops, and white meats such as veal or poultry. Its structure and mineral intensity also complement dishes with subtle richness, butter-based sauces, and precise seasoning. This is a wine for serious food and slow appreciation.
